This annual event transforms Big Bear Lake into an open-air gallery, where creativity meets mountain scenery. Watch talented painters capture the season’s beauty in real time, then explore the finished pieces on display at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center.

Big Bear’s fall colors set the stage for the 2nd Annual Big Bear Plein Air Art Competition, hosted by the Arts Council of Big Bear Valley in collaboration with Visit Big Bear, the City of Big Bear Lake, and the Big Bear Theatre Project.

Artists are invited to paint the beauty of Big Bear’s landscapes between September 15 and October 15, 2025. Whether it’s a single visit or several trips to perfect their piece, participants have the freedom to create at their own pace during the calm of autumn.

Finished works will be showcased at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center (Hofert Hall, 39707 Big Bear Blvd)from October 17–25, 2–7 PM daily. Visitors can browse the full collection, meet local and visiting artists, and even purchase original artwork inspired by the mountains.

Big Bear Plein Art competition is limited to 100 artists with one submission per participant, this event celebrates creativity, community, and the inspiring landscapes that make Big Bear a haven for artists.

After enjoying the Plein Air Art Exhibition, make a day of it by exploring Big Bear Lake dining options nearby. From cozy cafés and lakefront grills to upscale mountain dining, you’ll find the perfect spot to relax, refuel, and talk about your favorite works of art.

Plein air art is the practice of painting outdoors, directly in nature, to capture a scene’s true light, color, and atmosphere. Artists set up portable easels and paint quickly to reflect the changing light and mood of the moment. Rooted in the Impressionist movement, plein air painting celebrates spontaneity and the authentic beauty of the natural world.
